Omaha Strategy Hints & Tips

Advice for players moving from No Limit Holdem to Omaha

At first Omaha seems to be a more complicated game than No Limit Holdem.  Personally I think that Omaha can be much simpler.  Consider the following:

Each Omaha hand has many ways to connect with the flop. Your four starting cards give you six possible combinations of two card hands.  This means that more people are likely to call pre-flop and in general at Least Two players in a 6-9 player table will connect with the flop.  This leads to easier decisions post flop, especially if you have nothing as 95 per cent of the time you can just fold. Unless you are playing very short handed you will seldom play hands heads up on the flop.

By contrast, No Limit Holdem is full of uncertainty post flop.  Sometimes you will call with just ace high, or a low pair and be good. As players often have nothing in No Limit Holdem, bets are often used to bluff rather than for value.  Pots are often won by the worst hand and players often make wrong decisions if you are looking at the game from a maths perspective.  When playing Omaha there are many more opportunities to make value bets as you will connect so much more often.

I would say that the Main Key to No Limit Holdem is out playing opponents post flop, whereas in Omaha the key is to show down the winning hand.

The value of starting hands in Omaha

You will often hear people talk about how any four cards run close together in value.  This simply isn’t true.  It is true that situations such as AA v AJ in No Limit Holdem don’t occur in Omaha where the AA has such domination.

Warning

A quick and easy way to get yourself into lot of trouble when playing Omaha is to play bad starting hands.  You want to be drawing to the nuts the majority of the time, so playing mediocre holdings that don’t have nut possibilities is not a good idea!  Throw away bad starting hands and save yourself a lot of trouble and money.

Calculating odds

Very simply, calculating the odds and knowing how many outs you have is essential to success in Omaha.  If you don’t use Omaha Indicator I would thoroughly recommend giving it a try.  You can either buy a license or put money on to a poker site and “unlock” the license by earning points. I did the latter and it took about 4 days playing about 2-3 hours a day.
